Maragatham Ramaswamy

Maragatham Ramaswamy, a seasoned All India Radio artist and well known performing classical musician has been imparting training in South Indian classical vocal and violin music to interested and motivated students in the DC metropolitan area. She has trained under the renowned vocalist, S. Kalayanaraman, who himself was the disciple of the late maestro G.N. Balasubramaniam. A gold medalist from the prestigious Music College of Madras, she was also trained by prominent musicians such as Palghat K.V. Narayanaswamy, T.M. Thyagarajan, Ramanad Krishnan and B. Rajam Iyer. Her initial training in violin was under Trivandrum V. Harihara Iyer. She honed her violin skills under renowed artists like T.N. Krishnan, M.S. Anantharaman and Lalgudi Jayaraman.

She has to her credit cassette albums and many awards from prestigious organizations such as the Madras Music Academy and Krishna Gana Sabha, Madras. Her performances locally at the Smithsonian Institution, the Takoma Park Music festivals and the U.S. Army Base in Fort Belvoir helped propogate carnatic classical music to international audiences. She served as a music consultant for Terrance Macnally’s “A Perfect Ganesha” which was performed at Arena stage in Washington DC.

Her music institute called Ragamaalika which was started in 1987, has been imparting practical and theoretical aspects of carnatic music to students across various borders.
