BRIEF BIODATA OF NIRMALA RAMASWAMY

Summary:

Mrs. Nirmala Ramaswamy is the Founder-Director of GEETHAMRUTHA MUSIC SCHOOL for Carnatic Music, in Maryland. She is an accomplished artist and teacher, and has been performing and teaching Vocal Carnatic Music to students in the Greater Washington area for the past 15 years.

Nirmala started learning South Indian Classical Carnatic Music and Veena Lessons at a very young age, from several accomplished musicians. Her early lessons were with Sri Krishna Bagavathar of Kuala-Lumpur, Malaysia, and she continued her music education and training at Pudukkotai, India, with Sri Jayarama Iyer for Vocal and Veena lessons and subsequently with Sri M.K. Balakrishnan.

Nirmala Ramaswamy completed an intensive advanced training program in Carnatic Music at the prestigious Music Academy at Mylapore, Chennai, India, where she was a disciple of Sangeetha Kalanidhi and Padma Bhushan Sri B.Rajam Iyer. On successful completion of her advanced studies, she was awarded the diploma of "Sangeetha Rathna" in 1988 by the Music Academy at Madras. During this period, she also received training from Sri. P.S Thiagarajan, Director of "Raaga Sudha" at Madras.

Nirmala teaches music to all age groups consisting of beginners to advanced students. She frequently organizes and conducts Musical Evening Programs, Carnatic Music Concerts and Special Lecture/Workshop Demonstration Programs, to train and encourage her students to perform on stage before an audience.

Mrs. Nirmala Ramaswamy has performed many concerts and benefit performances in India, USA, Malaysia and Egypt. She has won many awards and citations recognizing her outstanding and dedicated service to Carnatic Music. Nirmala maintains the traditional and devotional style of rendering Carnatic Music, and she is well known and respected in the music circles of Greater Washington area.

In recognition of her dedicated services to Carnatic Music, Mrs. Nirmala Ramswamy was selected and honored by the Cleveland Thygaraja Aradhana Committee with the “Best Teacher Award” for the year 2004.
