Nadasourabha, First of its kind in the National Capital Area

A Report by Dr. M.S. Nataraja

More than 300 people gathered in the Richard Montgomery High School auditorium on June 21, 2003, Saturday afternoon to enjoy a unique Karnatic music concert, in all likelihood, the first of its kind for Washington DC metropolitan area. Twelve main artists and a chorus even bigger in number reverberated in unison under the able direction of Sri. Anoor Ananthakrishna Sharma (affectionately known as "Shivu", to his close circle of friends and admirers). The program conceived by the well-known musical institution, "Nadatarangini" was presented by "Kaveri" -another well-known Kannada cultural organization of Maryland, Virginia and Washington DC metropolitan area.

The orchestra consisted of two violins (Charulatha Ramanujam and Radhika Char), Nadaswaram (Bangalore Kodandaram), two mrudangas (Anoor Dattatreya Shama and Gautam Sudhakar), thavil (Thirugnana Shanmugam), gettuvadya (A.V. Kashinath), morsing, rhythm pads and western drums (all managed by B.S. Arun Kumar), pakhavaz (Srinath Bala), Khanjira (Sudhindra Rao), tabla and konokol (Shivu), main vocal singing (M.S. Sheela) with support from the Nadatarangini chorus group. Putting thirty artists on the stage to produce musical melody and a rhythmic extravaganza is, in and of itself, a great accomplishment. And to present an entire concert, including a spellbinding "tani-avartanam" is something to be remembered.

The program started with a 'mallari' in the raga gambheeranata and took every one back to the processions of famous temples of south India. The familiar sounds of the 'nadaswaram-thavil' combination reminded us of the traditional wedding ceremonies that we all miss here. Mysore Vasudevacharya's vinayakasthuthi, "pranamaamyaham" in gowla and Kanakadaasa's shaaradaasthuthi, "varava kodu vaagdevi" in kalyani followed the mallari. The next two pieces, Thyagaraja's "nagumomu" in abheri and a special composition by Shivu in kadanakuthoohala stole the audience' hearts because of the melody and the highly energetic swara patterns respectively. Kadanakuthoohala was expecially an excellent choice for exploiting the orchestral value. The central piece, a very melodious composition in mohana was custom-made for the tani-avartanam. Sheela, Charulatha and Kodandaram took turns to bring out additional treat during the swaraprastaara to include a series of ranjani's (ranjani, shivaranjani and janaranjani) and a series of priya's (Kharaharapriya, Ramapriya and Shanmukhapriya). All the rhythm experts took turns and "shook the hall" as it were, went their separate unique ways only to be back together with great precision in 'thaala' and merge into the melodic pattern that left the audience wondering if there are any limits for synchronizing different sounds into a Karnatic concert!

The Nadatarangini chorus joined enthusiastically to sing yet another 'Shivu-special,' a thillana in the raga, 'sumanasaranjani (to add one more ranjani to the garland of ranjani's!). The program concluded with the evergreen mangala, "Bhaagyada Lakshmi baaramma" in Madhamaavathi. Kudo's to Kaveri for organizing a great program mixing local and imported talents, cheers to Usha Char for her untiring energy in bringing musical variety to DC music lovers, hearty congratulations to all the visiting and local artists for joining hands, hats off to Shivu for his wonderful, imaginative and innovative direction, and finally grateful thanks to all those who made this unique program possible.
