BRIEF BIODATA OF SUGANDHA KALAMEGHAM

Known for her extraordinary musical acumen, classical purity, and
virtuosity combined with aesthetics, Smt. Sugandha Kalamegham has been
a much-sought-after performer in Carnatic music for over a decade.
Beginning her training at the age of 13, under Shri Kadayam
Krishnamurthy and Shri Gopala Iyer, Smt. Kalamegham rose rapidly to
win first prize in the national All India Radio competition in 1972.
In 1974, she was invited to perform at the Music Academy, her singing
was unanimously acclaimed, and she has never looked back since.

Smt. Kalamegham continued to learn from the erudite gurus Vidwan Sri
Sandhyavandhanam Srinivasa Rao and Sangeetha Kalanidhi TK Govinda Rao
(of the Musiri Subramania Iyer bani) and the veena maestro Trivandrum
Venkataraman. She has also formally learned Hindustani classical at
the world-renowned Gandharva Maha Vidhyalaya in New Delhi.

Smt. Kalamegham's singing is clearly acknowledged by both musicians
and music lovers for its classicism and its adherence to the Carnatic
tradition. Her voice is marked by its depth and she is known for her
strict sruti alignment. With her methodical planning before every
single concert, she always strikes the right balance between technical
perfection and melodic beauty.

Smt. Kalamegham is an A-grade artiste at All India Radio and has
performed extensively on the National Program of Music in AIR and
Doordarshan, and she has also been featured numerous times on other
television channels. She was a member of the Cultural Committee of the
12th Planning Commision, Government of India (2001-02), and she has
been recently appointed to the Senate of the Music Department of
Annamalai University in Chidambaram, Tamil Nadu. She has recorded for
HMV and INRECO, among other labels.
